OVERVIEW

The task

For this project, I helped a local hair salon with rebranding. Heung Gong salon's landlord requested an updated pylon sign design; since the salon's graphics were created many years ago, the owners thought it'd be easier to rebrand and submit something new. They asked me to help design a new pylon sign and business card for them. For privacy reasons, any names and information have been altered.

Process

Needs assessment

After talking with the owners, I determined that they felt their current branding felt generic template-like work. They wanted their new branding to show their pride for their culture and heritage.

Research

Being that the owners are from Hong Kong (as am I), I did some research into signage from their high-traffic areas like Mong Kok and Sham Sui Po. Hong Kong's famous for their streets full of calligraphic and neon signs, and have been featured in many movies. I began sketching to brainstorm some ideas, and worked with a few mockups that I gradually turned into the final design. The landlord's turnover time was short so I worked quickly to meet the due date.

REFLECTION

Closing thoughts

Because of the tight timeline, I regret not being able to further refine my work alongside the owner. A few more back-and-forth critique sessions would've been ideal, but ultimately the owner was happy with the results.

I also learned that working with cultural topics is finnicky; it's important to spend more time on the empathy and ideation phase of the design process to ensure that I'm not making any assumptions based on my own experiences.
